The classical rule of equal thirds

A classical proportion rule holds that the face divides into equal thirds: hairline to brow, brow to the base of the nose, and nose base to the bottom of the chin. Real faces rarely divide perfectly, and where the imbalance falls changes the impression substantially — a long lower third reads very differently from a long upper third even when the numeric deviation is identical.

Scoring the worst third, not the average

MogTracker computes all three proportions and scores the largest single deviation from 0.333 rather than the average. Scoring the average would let a long upper third cancel a short lower third and return a misleadingly good result. The metric reports the same maximum deviation it scores on, so the number you see is the number being judged.

Tied for the heaviest weight in the set

This metric uses linear scoring rather than the Gaussian curve most others use. A 1,700-photo calibration run showed the curve was too punishing here, scoring ordinary faces near zero for modest deviations. Its 12% weight ties canthal tilt for the largest share of the composite. Note that the upper third depends on hairline position, so a receding or unusually low hairline shifts this metric independently of any change in bone structure.

This has the most evenly spread distribution of all sixteen metrics — scores populate every band with no pile-up at either end. Combined with joint-heaviest weight, that makes it the single biggest driver of where you land relative to other people. If you want one number to explain your composite, it is this one, and unlike most of the set it is genuinely separating faces rather than assigning nearly everyone the same result.

Yes. The upper third is measured from the hairline, so recession lengthens it and lowers the score without anything else having changed.

Why does one bad third tank the whole metric?

The score is based on the largest deviation of the three. Averaging would let a long upper third mask a short lower one and hide a visible imbalance behind a good number.
