Rather than measuring either feature against the whole face, this compares them directly. A mouth substantially wider than the nose reads as balanced; a mouth close to nose width tends to read as narrow, and the effect is more noticeable in profile-neutral, front-facing views than in photographs taken at an angle.

Why the reference sits below 1.0

MogTracker divides mouth width at the commissures by alar width, referencing 0.843. That number surprises people who expect something above 1.0, and the reason is the same landmark inflation described on the nose width page: because the measured nose is wider than the anatomical one, the ratio comes out lower than clinical figures suggest.

A floor that had to be lowered

The accepted floor for this metric was lowered deliberately after real scans confirmed that ordinary faces produce sub-1.0 ratios on this landmark set — an earlier, tighter range scored normal faces near zero and was wrong. Its 6% weight puts it mid-pack. It moves if you change either feature, so it is worth reading alongside nose width rather than on its own.
